Texas Hold’em Articles: What Is Poker Tilt And Managing It
Poker Lessons - Why Tilt Is Devastating To Your Poker Game And Bankroll

There are many useful strategies in poker that are psychological and mathematical that help players play the game better. By following the different rules you will figure out how to win the game, but what is the strategy for someone who is losing the game who is having a hard time getting it together. What happens when players reach their “Tilt” level and what should they do to handle it?

As with any employment a person needs to take a rest from their work, the same holds true for people who play poker, getting a break will allow players who are experiencing Tilt to relax, take time off, get rest both emotionally and physically and allows them to take control of their poker life and be able to get back into the game and make a whole lot of money.

Everyone wants to know what Tilt is, what causes it and how to avoid it. Tilt is something that happens often and no one is immune to tilt. It is when a player who plays often plays so much that they come to a point of bad luck or just bad times, They are running into a lot of instances of negative variances that last for a few days to a couple of weeks. It is just one of those things that happen and you cant change it. However you can get away from it.

Then once you start into the tilt mode, your emotions will take over and you think you need to keep playing until eventually you win. You have officially made it to “Tilt”.

This is why it is very important for players who are having a bit of bad luck to take a break from the game, walk away and just relax. Most players cannot afford being in tilt, and none can afford to go into tilt mode regularly. That is why it is very important to stop the effects of tilt as soon as possible. So instead of playing poker, you do other things avoiding the tilt factor for a short period of time.

You are now probably wondering, how long you should go on this break, especially when you are a professional player and your livelihood depends on your ability to think clearly and to play with all of your faculties. When you are in a Tilt, and losing regularly you will want to stop for a rest so that you can get back on track. So the break should be as long as it takes, whether it is a matter of hours or a matter of weeks, you should stay away from the game till you can give it your best again.

When you are on your break, you should not play poker, you should try other activities that interest you such as playing golf, going for a run or taking a swim, you may even want to take your wife or husband on a date or play with the kids. However, you need to stay away from the game completely, don’t even read books about the subject, don’t watch others play the game, don’t visit casinos, completely stay away. You need to get rid of all the negative energy that is surrounding you so that you can feel that positive feeling you need to play the game and make money.

Find relaxing things to do, go on a trip, write about something, anything that keeps you away from playing poker, and helps you to get your focus back. When the break is over and you can realistically go back to playing your “A” game then you can return to the game. If you are still experiencing a negative variance, continue to relax and go back to your break, if it is over then go into your game full force.

Now many people will say they are a pro and they really can’t afford to take time off and they need to make money, because this is their main source of income. While it is important that you make money, continuous loses will have an even worse affect on your income and it may make you lose your bankroll that you definitely can’t afford to lose. So having a short break will ensure that you continue to enjoy the level of winning you need to maintain your normal lifestyle. Besides if you are a professional player, you need to have a Tilt fund, money you put aside to live on while you are taking your break so that you are not without funds during this time.

Being on a Tilt is a huge problem for those who play the game of poker, they will need to recognize that this is happening and know what they need to do to keep it under control. They will want to stop playing for a while and take a break, by participating in other activities and staying away from the game. You will need to take care of yourself and learn how to stop playing so that you can get back on track. If you find yourself losing too much or if you lost a few big pots and start thinking if I do this or do that I will win, it may be a Tilt and you will need to get away from the game for a while.

While on your Tilt, rest, find something to do that is physical that requires you to relax and dedicate yourself to something other than Poker, such as physical activities. Play football, baseball and any other thing that could keep you occupied. Burn of the angry feelings you may have and then when you are sure that you feel better and are ready to return to the game, and then you should do so.

In addition, you will want to set limits for the first few times back after your break, just to be sure that your Tilt is actually done and that you are back to the game 100% and you are ready to play with no more problems. If you reach your loss limit that you set, stop and come back tomorrow that way you are fresh for a new day and you can put your best foot forward again.
