When playing poker online you will learn that like in a normal land based casino that it is important to be able to read your opponents and how they play their hands or make their bets. Being able to observe your opponent will allow you to figure out what kind of player they are and what kind of player you will have to be in order to make money at the table playing against the player or against many players.
A really good player knows the importance of checking up on his opponent even when he has folded or is just watching the game, in other words even when he is not in the hand he take his time to see how the player plays and what moves he makes. Being able to do this allows them to go on fact finding missions with their opponents, they learn to understand what a player does when in high pressure situations and how they bet when they think there is a possibility of actually winning a hand. The player will use this particular information to insure that they win anytime there is a showdown between them and that particular opponent. They will also want to check out every other player in the same way so that they have the advantage of knowing when a player does some particular thing that they do.
There are some very important things that they should watch out for when playing online poker. They should take a minute to watch the betting patterns of the players; this is very important do they bet on everything. Some people tend to ante everything so that they can see the first three cards before they fold, others expect to have pairs or Ace and another card. You will want to find out what they are raising with, do they raise on high pairs or wait till they see the Ace. Do they ever get confused or unsure and play a certain type of hand slowly? Are they known for bluffing quite a bit? It is very important to find out what their patterns are and what they do when they are making those bets. Watch how they act whenever they have a particularly good hand, you will want to know if they jump out and bet quickly, or only make a small bet to keep people in the game.
The most important thing to notice especially how they play, you want to be sure if you find a player who is usually a very tight player, who raises only ever so often, who never plays any hands slowly and never spends any time bluffing his way through hands, and that player should come in and make that large raise, then you will be safe in the assumption that his hand is really great, it would be a good idea to just let him do what he has to do.
There are some “tells” that are physical, these are his responses when his has a good or bad hand that is apparent in his body language or on his face. This is particularly easy if you are playing the game face to face, however this is not at all the case when you are playing against opponents online. When online this factor may not mean anything to you or anyone else because you can’t actually see what a person is doing physically. In this situation you will need to rely mostly on how the players bet, when they make larger bets you can assume that they either have a really great hand or they are bluffing, then you will need to know how often they bluff, if they never bluff then you can safely assume they have a really great hand.
When learning how to watch your players, play with friends in a friendly game, this way you learn how to observe what they do, how they bet and you can even try guessing what they may be holding in their hand. Think about how close you actually got to figure out what your opponent was holding when you lay you’re hands down. Of course this two may be harder to do online because a person can muck their hand and you may not see what they have, however keep track of how they play after some cards are played that you can see and after you and another player are in a showdown, watch what they were holding in that situation.
In the beginning you will find that you are wrong quite a bit, however you will learn to be extremely accurate once you have done this quite a bit and you will also learn how to incorporate the information you collect and make it a part of how you play the game. Another thing you will want to remember when beginning is not showing your hands, always Much the rest of your hand when you have the chance to do so, that way stronger players will not have the chance to read what you play. You will want to keep in mind that your opponents may have already learned to read their opponents.
Take your time to learn the many different poker tells that will help you to observe what the other players are doing, and help you gain the advantage over your opponents, learning these skills will give you a chance when you are playing against other players. Practicing these particular skills will make you be able to access the players when you are not in a hand so that you will know what they do when in pressure situations and what they will bet on. As a new player take your time, watch the players and much everything that you can so that more experienced players will not learn how to read you. Take this process seriously and observe every player and mentally take note of each player’s style to use during other hands throughout the game.
