Power Poker Course’s Book Review:

I think that the evolution of a poker player is pretty interesting. Everyone who learns a little about the game thinks pretty highly of themselves, but the truth of the matter is that you have to go through certain stages to become great. You can't, for instance, skip from "beginner" to "expert" without learning "intermediate" somewhere in the middle. You just won't absorb everything you think you will, regardless of what you think about your own capabilities.

Winning Poker for the Serious Player” is the first poker book that I ever read; I bought it almost ten years ago. It was a great first book, and even today, as I look it over, the wisdom still rings true. It doesn't really say anything that hasn't already been covered in other books by now, but the wisdom hasn't soured over the years, and it's all very well explained - even for the layman.

Because of this, this book is not really for an intermediate or advanced player; it's strictly for the beginner. It even prints the poker lingo in bold letters to let you know which words you can look up in the glossary if you don't already understand them. It's a kind of a "jack-of-all trades" book, covering everything from weekend poker parties to whether or not to tip your casino dealer (yes, you should).

The nice thing about this book is that the different sections lend equal weight to other forms of poker - not just Hold 'Em like most poker books these days. The section on Low Ball poker is just as thorough as the Hold 'Em section - which may not seem practical, but the truth is that learning other forms of poker will only help your Hold 'Em game. It also covers Draw, High-Low, Stud, and even has a small section on some of the crazy variants you might find at a friend's house.

In conclusion, even though you've probably never heard of Edward Silberstang, his advice is sound and well-organized. If you or someone you know is looking to learn the basics of poker, this is a very good place to start.
