Power Poker Course’s Book Review:

No-limit Hold 'Em poker has definitely gained in popularity in the past few years, but in the US there just aren't that many casinos outside of Las Vegas that can offer the game legally. For the recreational player (who doesn't want to lose more than a rack or two of chips in any given session), low-limit Hold 'Em is the game, and these days the most popular form of limit poker is $3 - $6. If walk into your local poker room you're pretty much guaranteed to find a $3 - $6 (or sometimes $4 - $8) game going strong.

As such, Winning Low-Limit Hold 'Em is a valuable and informative text. It's a great place to start for new players because, despite the introductory text stating that the book is not for beginners, it begins very simply and explains all the basic gambling concepts in easy-to-understand terms.

Similar to many Hold 'Em Poker books out there, WLLHE has its own set of starting standards. Right in the beginning, the book states that it will "teach you to win by folding" -- and on that note, I am of the opinion that the starting requirements are perhaps a little bit too tight. But then that's just fine for a beginner. I'd have to agree with something else the book says, which is that when you're first starting out in poker, it doesn't really matter which starting standards you use -- the differences between them are negligible -- just so long as you use some standards. You can always tweak these standards as your understanding of the game progresses.

A very positive thing to note is that the structure of the book flows well and it's all laid out clearly for swift learning. As with any good book for beginners, the glossary in the back is comprehensive and easy-to-swallow, and should anable any novice reader to understand the strange poker lingo that is often thrown around the green felt. The only black mark I'd give this book is the fact that there are only a few pages dedicated to turn and river play -- but for beginners, those streets should play fairly straightforward until they develop skills in these areas, which are skills I'd think of as more in the intermediate to advanced poker skill category.

In short, like many other professional poker players, I would recommend this book to anybody looking to get into the game. An advanced player won't find anything new here, but this is a great first text for the beginning player.
