Power Poker Course’s Book Review:
Mike Caro's Book of Tells has long been the standard manual for understanding the psychological warfare that takes place over the green felt, but it's also long overdue for an overhaul. While some of the ideas in Caro's book are still valid, a lot of the material has become outdated and useless, mostly because of the fact that the information has become widespread.
The Ultimate Guide to Poker Tells is just one of the new breed of poker books that has hit the market, one of many attempting to fill the void left in the years since Caro's book was written. But is it a suitable replacement? In a word: no.
This is not to say that it's not a useful book; in fact, it is one of the better ones out there. I only say that it can't replace Caro's book because in order to read your opponents, you must understand your opponents, and in order to understand your opponents, you must tread where they have trodden. Every serious player has traveled the pages of Caro's book, and so must you, if only to know what is in their minds.
Having said that, the Ultimate guide to Poker Tells is a decent piece of work, even referencing some of Caro's thoughts from time to time - as well as several other respected poker authors. In all honesty, there isn't a whole lot of new information, but it's laid out well. It uses mostly text to talk the points home, but the "testing chapter" utilizes a small series of (admittedly cheesy) photographs to make some of the ideas clearer.
With the exception of one or two narrow-minded specifics, I thought that the Ultimate guide to Poker Tells delivered what it promised. All in all, it's a good catch, and contains some useful discussion, as well as additional resources for the serious player. I wouldn't put this book in the “Top 5 Must-Read Poker Books” category, but if you feel that tells are a weak subject area for you which can do with some improvements, then this book is definitely a pretty good place to start with.
