Power Poker Course’s Book Review:
Tournaments aren't easy. I can tell you from personal experience that, after winning one, it feels like you've been through a war zone. Hours of exhausting play are tough no matter what you've got up your sleeve. Fortunately, David Sklansky has done it again with his excellent and thoughtful book, Tournament Poker for Advanced Players.
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players goes far beyond standard strategy and delves into lesser-known topics, dealing in specific tournament mathematics and discussing, in detail, the many strategic adjustments that must be made in order to go the distance in tournament play.
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players covers everything from the "Gap Concept," to all-in strategy, to whether or not you should make a deal with other the players at your final table. For the mathematically inclined, Sklansky makes sure to show the proper formulas and numbers where applicable, although there's not as many headache inducing numbers as in some of the other Sklansky books.
Although the original book focused mainly on limit tournaments, 2 + 2 released an expanded edition, in 2007, which featured over 100 new pages specifically devoted to no-limit tournament concepts. This section, on its own, will refund the book's purchase price countless times over, if properly absorbed.
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players is structured in classic 2 + 2 publishing style, presenting complex concepts in an easy-to-read and understandable format. The end of the book is filled with the now-common "Hand Quizzes," which help to bridge the difference between knowing proper tournament play, and implementing it in the heat of the moment.
In conclusion, I would personally recommend this book to any serious tournament hopeful. The only negative point, which are the few typos and grammatical errors inside, shouldn't dissuade you from buying and reading this book. There's just too much important information to pass up; information that, without a mathematics degree and years of experience, would be out of grasp for the average player. Sklansky brings both of these things to the table, so use them such as you can - without question, this book is a must-have for any serious tournament poker player.
