Power Poker Course’s Book Review:

Considering how much the game has changed in the twenty-seven years since the original "Super System" book was written, Super System 2 has been a long time coming.

The advice is more practical in this edition, more so for the fact that it covers games that are actually being played these days. The Omaha and Stud sections are well-written and useful; and while I've never played Triple-Draw, I truly respect Daniel Negreanu's advice, so I accept what he says at face value. Also, as expected, Jennifer Harmon's limit poker section is also top-notch.

To some players, it comes as a disappointment in this book that the No-limit Hold 'Em section of this book, by Doyle Brunson himself, appears to be the same text that was presented in the first Super System book. Doyle Brunson himself was stated as saying that in rewriting the 2nd edition of this book, he reread his old material and found himself to agree with what he has written all these years ago and believes it still stands as good solid advice.

It is arguable that when the first Super System was released there weren't any other reliable works on No-limit Hold 'Em to compare it to, and therefore this material could be considered as groundbreaking information for its days. The advice it offered was a revelation and brand new for most players, and thus it deserved the praise it got at the time. Nowadays however, there are quite a few great texts written about the No-limit Hold 'Em poker game. These newer texts have already had Doyle's original advice absorbed, examined and expounded upon. This does raise the question of whether Doyle's advice is still really the best advice anymore. Nevertheless, it does present an alternative playing style which, if played appropriately in the right situations, would most likely be still profitable – just not as profitable as it once was many decades ago, due to the fact that more skilled players are now aware of this playing style.

In many ways, it would have been a bonus if this section had been rewritten because some of the things that Doyle says can be confusing to the modern player. For example, he says he frequently goes all-in with the worst hand, but only when he has "an out." Well, these days, so much work has been written on the mathematics of poker and counting outs, that one must be careful when describing "having an open-ended straight draw" as having "an out" (as Doyle does.) After all, having "an out" can literally mean that you have only one card in the deck that can help you win or possibly draw – this is really not the best situation to find yourself in, as I'm sure even Doyle would agree to that!

In closing, I think this book makes a worthy addition to anyone looking to learn a variety of poker games, but there's nothing new on the No-limit Hold 'Em front of this book compared to the first edition. So, if you already have the first Super System, there's really no reason to pick this one up if No-limit Hold 'Em is your only game. On the other hand, if you don't already have the first one, this one is a better catch. Same is true if you want to pick up your skills in the other forms of poker discussed in this newer book that aren't contained in the first edition.
