Power Poker Course’s Book Review:
Small Stakes Hold 'Em is the newest limit book put out by 2 + 2 publishing. For many years, Sklansky's Hold 'Em for Advanced Players has been the go-to book for players looking to learn about limit Hold 'Em, and this book makes a nice complement to it.
SSHE isn't just about playing for smaller stakes, it's about playing with bad players - and it just so happens that you'll find a lot of these players at the smaller limits. Even in bigger games, poor play has become fairly prevalent, which is why I think this book is so valuable. It covers some basic mathematical concepts such as pot odds, reverse implied odds and pot equity, and explains how they affect your decisions differently in the large, multiway pots that poor play is sure to produce.
The truth of the matter is, most generally good players don't adjust very well for a table full of bad players. A good analogy is to say that someone who is considered a great communicator amongst his peers, doesn't necessarily know how to talk to children effectively. It is much the same at the poker table; it's not that you won't win playing a standard, conservative style, but you certainly won't win as much.
It's normally very difficult for players to explain how they beat games like this, which is why this book has been a long time coming. Written in classic 2 + 2 style, SSHE continues their tradition of presenting very complex material in an easy-to-read and well-presented format. It's a little deficient on detailed turn and river advice, but that's because, for the most part, this book is geared towards the established player - it's not a book on how to play, but rather a book on how to adjust your play for a poor table.
Hand quizzes are available at the end of the book, as with every Sklansky offering, to act as a diagnostic tool telling you how well you understand the material that's been covered. As always, the math is shown at every step to help teach you how to come to your own conclusions at the table, when no one is whispering how to proceed in your ear.
All in all, this is another great 2 + 2 book, and it should be a part of any limit player's library.
