Power Poker Course’s Book Review:

Power Hold 'Em Strategy, released by Cordoza publishing, is the second book put forth by Daniel Negreanu. Containing almost 500 pages of prime poker material, Power Hold 'Em Strategy should swiftly become recognized as one of the most respectable pieces of work to be out on the market.

Focusing strictly on no-limit Hold 'Em, Power Hold 'Em Strategy has everything - it is in fact a complete discourse, and is among the most useful books on poker that I've ever read. It contains six ample sections, authored by six brilliant and gifted professionals, all of whom spill their considerable secrets to the reader.

Evelyn Ng, a somewhat new but up-and-coming poker personality, penned the first chapter, which describes a big-bet approach that is appropriate for novice tournament players. The next section is by Todd Brunson; it details how to adjust for high-stakes no limit such as what you might see the pros playing on T.V. Erick Lindgren is responsible for the next segment, which gives insight into the subtleties of online no-limit play, while Paul Wasicka covers strategy for the short-handed online tables. David Williams pipes in with a chapter called only "Mixing it Up," which shows how loose and unorthodox play can reap rewards when utilized correctly.

Negreanu himself bats clean-up with the (by far) best section, called simply "Small Ball." This section literally transformed my poker game by showing me a more advanced way to handle my cards. Put simply, the goal of small ball is to spread risk over a wide variety of hands - as opposed to putting all your eggs in one basket, so to speak. This is mostly done by combining small bets and raises with superior post-flop analysis in order to trap an opponent with a deceptive hand.

To conclude, I would place this at the top of my list for best no-limit books - tied only with Harrington's excellent series. This book truly changed my game for the better, and if you don't somehow learn the lessons - the ones that Small Ball offer in particular - that get taught, then you're dooming yourself to mediocrity.
