Power Poker Course’s Book Review:
The "Dummies" series has become well-known for gathering capable professionals and picking their brains for topical knowledge. This latest effort, Poker for Dummies, is no exception.
Poker for Dummies covers all the popular types of poker games, including Seven-Card Stud, Texas Hold 'Em, Omaha Eight-or Better, and even some of the crazy variations that you might find at your Friday night poker game. One section even tells you all the ins-and-outs of organizing your own poker party, from home poker etiquette to the best way to settle up at the end of the night.
One thing I like about Poker for Dummies is the layout of the book; it's not a tutorial, but a reference - which means it's not necessarily meant to be read cover to cover. Each section stands out on its own, and can be read in any order you wish. Already know the basics? Skip to the advanced section. Need bankroll advice? Hop ahead to the segment on money-management.
All in all, there are five sections to Poker for Dummies: How to Play the Games, Advanced Strategy, Computers, Casinos and Cardrooms, More Poker Fun, and The Part of Tens. The first three are self-explanatory. More Poker Fun contains anecdotes, poker in popular culture, and some of the lingo you might hear around the cardroom, while The Part of Tens is a traditional section in all the Dummies books, containing top-ten lists such as Ten Ways to Read your Opponents and The Ten Best Poker Players.
This book isn't necessarily for advanced players, though, so you may not want to waste the money if you've got a load of experience under your belt. It covers important mathematical concepts like EV and standard deviation, but even the section on advanced strategy probably won't contain anything new for a very established player. Although the book contains a great list of resources for further learning, there just aren't enough concrete examples to help out a player with an advanced poker mind. That being said, it's still a great book for the beginner, the beginner evolving to intermediate level, or the casual player to add to their libraries.
