Power Poker Course’s Book Review:

I remember the first time I read this book "Play poker like the Pros" it was probably about a year ago. My first impression was not good, and I didn't do much more than skim around a few pages. However, the other day I pulled this book out again and gave it another chance, and I have to say I've been forced to re-evaluate my original opinion.

Admittedly, my opinion of Phil Hellmuth has never been all that great - I mean, the man is well known to tout his own skill to no end, and at the same time belittles anyone who dares to breathe the same air that he does (hence the nickname he has earned as the “Poker Brat“). The book is no different; he goes on and on about how great he is.

However I feel about Phil personally, I can't help but admit that the man knows his game - and he tells you all about it in this book - and although the style of the writing isn't my favorite, the material in the book is sound. Phil covers all the popular casino games, from Seven-Card Stud to Omaha Eight-or-Better, though he does primarily concentrate on no-limit Texas Hold 'Em.

Phil classifies different styles of player - and how to play against them - by using animal names such as "The Mouse" or "The Elephant." He includes quite a few examples from other players' portfolios, and even praises some other players' exploitations of different styles, many of which conflict with his own - and that alone helped me to appreciate that there's more to the "crybaby of poker" than meets the eye. However, while it contains reliable advice, I found some of the descriptions in the book a little cartoonish and simplified for an advanced player. But for a beginner or intermediate player, it does have its merits so long as you ignore the obvious arrogance of Phil’s self-promoting style.

To conclude, I can't say that this book is the best one I've read, but it's certainly not the worst. If I had picked it up earlier in my Hold 'Em career, I think I would have found it more insightful, but as most of the material is directed towards beginners, not a whole lot of it was new to me when I had already become more advanced in my knowledge than most of the information presented -- but that‘s just me. To summarise, I’d still say that it's a worthwhile book to check out if you're a new or intermediate player, or if you're looking to learn more about some of the different games.
