Doyle Brunson's Super System has been often been referred to as the "bible of poker" by many people. If this is indeed a fitting name for that book, then we would have to think of Hold 'Em Poker for Advanced Players as the "encyclopedia of Hold 'Em." Sklansky and Malmuth have done some great collaboration work since, but this book was the first definitive work on the subject, and many-a-player has worn both covers thin reading and re-reading the great material contained within this book.

It's worthwhile to note here that this book is dedicated to Limit Hold 'Em. However, that being said, learning Limit Hold 'Em should be a prerequisite for playing any kind of Hold 'Em variant. No-limit frequently involves pre-flop or on-the-flop shoving matches that preclude turn and river tactics -- but neglecting these areas are a mistake for any player, and this book is widely accepted as being the best for helping the intermediate player to understand the many complexities of post-flop play.

The first half of the book contains solid and systematic methods for playing a hand, from start to finish - these are the fundamentals of Hold 'Em, and any serious player should memorize its contents. It introduces many crucial concepts for sound Hold 'Em play, including the now well-known "hand groupings," which help in implementing a logical and profitable system for playing the first two cards.
