Power Poker Course’s Book Review:

Doyle Brunson's Super System has been often been referred to as the "bible of poker" by many people. If this is indeed a fitting name for that book, then we would have to think of Hold 'Em Poker for Advanced Players as the "encyclopedia of Hold 'Em." Sklansky and Malmuth have done some great collaboration work since, but this book was the first definitive work on the subject, and many-a-player has worn both covers thin reading and re-reading the great material contained within this book.

It's worthwhile to note here that this book is dedicated to Limit Hold 'Em. However, that being said, learning Limit Hold 'Em should be a prerequisite for playing any kind of Hold 'Em variant. No-limit frequently involves pre-flop or on-the-flop shoving matches that preclude turn and river tactics -- but neglecting these areas are a mistake for any player, and this book is widely accepted as being the best for helping the intermediate player to understand the many complexities of post-flop play.

The first half of the book contains solid and systematic methods for playing a hand, from start to finish - these are the fundamentals of Hold 'Em, and any serious player should memorize its contents. It introduces many crucial concepts for sound Hold 'Em play, including the now well-known "hand groupings," which help in implementing a logical and profitable system for playing the first two cards. It then thoroughly discusses play on the flop as well as tactical turn and river play.

The second half of the book is full of informative essays on miscellaneous poker topics, such as "playing in loose games" and "heads-up on the river." And that's one of the greatest things about Sklansky and Malmuth's works -- they discuss every little outcome they can think of, and more importantly, they explain every little detail that goes into how they make their decisions. There are so many variables within the complexity of post-flop play that these little details are crucial to understanding how to make those decisions on your own. After all, making solid and well-thought-out decisions is what constitutes to superior poker play which eventually will lead to superior poker wins and profits.

In closing, there are only a few poker books that are considered a must-have these days, and anyone who knows anything about the poker game knows that HEPFAP is most certainly near the very top of that poker reading list. Don't waste time waiting around to decide whether you should buy it or not, just go out and get it! Any losses you will incur by not reading the material contained within this book should be enough to convince you to go out there and grab yourself a copy, pronto!
