Nowadays, there is a saying in the poker world:

"There are two types of players. Those who have read Harrington's books and those who haven't."

And it is true. Harrington on Hold 'Em has changed the way people play the game. In fact, on a personal note, it completely hanged the way I play, and it did so in just the first few pages.

The first chapter of Harrington on Hold 'Em discusses three different playing styles: Conservative, Aggressive, and Super-Aggressive. In his discussion about conservative play, Harrington remarks that, for beginners, conservative is the best style to utilize. I remember, very clearly, thinking, "That's how beginners should play!? So... after playing conservatively for almost ten years, I'm still playing like a beginner?"

And thus began my journey to poker expertise. It may go against everything that you've learned as a player, but - especially when playing no-limit - loose play is only bad if you aren't skilled enough to handle the difficult post-flop situations that you'll create for yourself. Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses, but the bottom line is that conservative play isn't better than looser, aggressive play - it's just easier.

Harrington on Hold 'Em is a three-book series that takes you on the journey from novice to expert, using thorough and relevant examples of real-life tournament situations to explain the complex concepts that he discusses. As with every 2 + 2 book, the information is laid out in a well-thought out manner, conducive to learning, and the hand analysis sections explains how professional players think through their decisions like no other has been able to pull off.

The first two books are packed full of useful information, detailing pre-flop starting standards (for those who want to stay conservative-minded), as well as identifying and thoroughly coaching on the post-flop analytical processes necessary for top-level play. The third book is a workbook, full of quizzes and situations that Harrington has analyzed for your benefit.

In conclusion, this book single-handedly evolved my game to the next level, and several of my friends showed marked improvement immediately after I recommended it to them. Bottom line? A must-have for any serious tournament player.
