Power Poker Course’s Book Review:
Ace on the River does not focus on strategy - it doesn't teach you how to play the game so much as philosophize on how to live a good life amongst the perils and pitfalls of a gambler's existence. In this regard it succeeds admirably, and has thus become one of my favorite poker books of all time.
Barry seems to be a good man at heart, and doesn't mind taking advantage of those who deserve it. He paints a portrait of a vastly complex and sometimes seedy world; a dark world he has been trying to bring into the light. He also paints himself as a kind of Robin Hood of poker - because of his well-known promotion for the supporting of charitable causes, he has persuaded many top tournament players now donate 10% of their winnings to charity.
To the best of his ability, he is changing the way that poker players view the world, as well as how the world views poker. Some people may think Greenstein comes across a little preachy, but I think this is just an honest account of a gambler's life - and besides, the gambling world needs an overhaul of it's seedy image now that poker has become mainstream.
Among the many things that make this book so entertaining are the quotes that adorn the first page of each chapter. Several of my favorite quotes have come from this book. After the anecdotes and colorful stories that make this book so amusing - some of which highlight some well-known players - Barry includes a strategical section that discusses advanced play, with real-life examples taken from his own professional experiences.
It would be nice if the strategy section were bigger, but that's not really what this book is supposed to be about. It's more of a biography. He discusses his hands with sound strategic analysis, making it easy for a seasoned player - but probably not so much for a beginner - to clearly understand his thought processes.
All in all, this is one of my favorite poker books. It doesn't really cover anything strategic that can't be found in other books, but the stories and viewpoint he offers make this book well worth adding to your collection. It will likely add another dimension to your views on poker and understanding of the game in general.
